Description:
- The Royer R-10 is a passive mono ribbon microphone designed for both studio recording and live sound applications. Hand-built in Royers Burbank, California factory, the R-10 delivers the unmistakable Royer sound and performance, with the ability to handle sound pressure levels of up to 160 dB SPL at 1 kHz. Its compact form factor and flexible mounting system allow for easy, unobtrusive placement in virtually any recording or stage environment.
- At the heart of the R-10 is a 2.5-micron aluminum ribbon element, formed using Royers patented direct-corrugation process. The ribbon is protected by a three-layer windscreen system and an internally shock-mounted ribbon transducer, which isolates the element from mechanical vibrations and increases long-term durability. The ribbon transducer is wired in a humbucking configuration, effectively rejecting noise caused by electromagnetic interference.
- The integrated windscreen offers excellent protection from air blasts and plosives while also reducing proximity effect, allowing guitar cabinets and acoustic instruments to be close-miked with less low-frequency buildup. The internally shock-mounted design further protects the ribbon from shocks and handling noise, making the R-10 suitable for demanding studio and live environments.
- The R-10 utilizes a custom-designed David Royer transformer, providing a high overload threshold and minimizing saturation even at extreme SPLsensuring clean, distortion-free performance under all conditions. An open-grille design reduces standing waves and comb-filtering effects, while the microphones smooth frequency response, excellent phase linearity, and absence of self-distortion make it an ideal choice for modern digital recording and live sound systems.
- Sonically, the R-10 excels across a wide range of sources. Brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones can be close-miked with ease, delivering a natural brightness without the harshness or exaggerated sizzle often associated with condenser microphones. Drums sound full-bodied with realistic, unhyped transients, and the R-10s figure-8 polar pattern provides exceptional ambience and depth when used as a room microphone. A compressed R-10 placed in front of a drum kit delivers a powerful, punchy sound.
- Stringed instrumentsincluding violins, ukuleles, steel-string and nylon-string acoustic guitars, banjos, and moreare captured with warmth and natural detail that sit effortlessly in a mix. Subtle EQ enhancements, such as gently opening up the top end around 12 kHz, can yield surprisingly open and airy results. Vocals are recorded warm and natural, and the R-10s exceptional EQ-friendliness allows for dramatic tonal shapingtry rolling off low frequencies around 100 Hz and boosting 12 kHz by 36 dB or more for added clarity and presence.
